What is Boseong Ganghaju Wine?

Also known as Ganghaju (過夏酒), this wine has been made since the mid-Joseon Dynasty. The name means a liquor that never goes bad even in summer. It also means a drink that is made in spring and drunk in summer or that drinking this wine guarantees healthy summer.
A tasty beverage, brown in shade, it has been made since the 1800s in Yulpo, Hoecheon-myeon. Unlike other folk liquors, Boseong Ganghaju Wine a has difficult creation process. It fell out of production due to the strict liquor tax policy but has been promoted since 2000 as part of the Folk Food Preservation Project by the Jeollanam-do Agricultural Technology Institute based on a recipe passed down to Do Hwa-Ja (56, female) from her grandmother Na Young-Rae (born in 1890) and mother Lee Gwi-Bok (born in 1903).

Ganghaju Wine is a traditional folk drink made of locally-produced grain. Gentle but with a unique flavor and tangy but soft taste are the characteristics of this home made wine.
